花火大会

Fireworks are one of the most memorable feature of Japanese summer! 🎆
This year, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival will be held on Saturday, July 27th! 🤩
In this article, we will provide you with all necessary information on this festival, including the venue, things to take note of on that day, and whether you can see the fireworks from the guestrooms at HOTEL TAVINOS Asakusa. 🥰

A traditional fireworks festival with origins in the Edo period

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is the oldest and largest firework festival in Japan. It was originated from the "Ryogoku River Opening Fireworks" held during the Edo period. ✨
On the day of the festival, about 20,000 fireworks will brightly light up Tokyo's summer night. ✨

With an increasing number of tourists visiting Japan, this year's event is expected to be even more crowded than one year before.

This year's Sumida River Fireworks Festival will have two venues

Fireworks will be launched at the first venue around Kototoibashi Bridge and the second venue around Komagatabashi and Umayabashi Bridges. As the festival is held in the city center, there are not a lot of space on the riverbanks to sit, so the best experience would be to watch the fireworks while walking along the Sumida River.

Location of Kototoi, Komagata and Umayabashi Bridges

The Sumida River is well-known for its Azumabashi Bridge. It is also from there that you can see the golden object in the form of a beer foam above the Asahi Group Headquarters. The first venue of the festival, Kototoibashi Bridge, is located to the left of Azumabashi Bridge. And to the right is the second one, Komagatabashi and Umayabashi Bridges.

This photo was taken from Umayabashi Bridge. As you can see, it has quite a panoramic view on the Sumida river. The bridge, which can be seen in the distance, is Komagatabashi. The nearest station to Umayabashi Bridge is Kuramae, and it may be less crowded than the area around Asakusa Station.

Can you see fireworks from the rooms at HOTEL TAVINOS Asakusa?

The upper floors of HOTEL TAVINOS Asakusa have rooms with a view of the Tokyo Skytree. We hope that our guests, that are staying there, would be able to enjoy fireworks from their rooms. But sadly, we cannot guarantee that for sure, as it would be only the second Sumida River Fireworks Festival, since the opening of our hotel and we still do not have enough data.

How can I stay in a room with a Tokyo Skytree view?

At HOTEL TAVINOS, our guests can select their preferred rooms during check in 😊 (*Depending on the type of the reservation, we may assign to you a room in advance).
Although, even on a typical day, the rooms with Tokyo Skytree view have the highest popularity and are likely to be chosen first, so there are probably will be even a higher demand on them on the day of the festival 😣
We recommend for you to plan your checking in as early as possible 😣

Where should I make a reservation?

HOTEL TAVINOS' official website offers the lowest prices♪
We have various discounts and plans, such as early and long stay discounts, yukata rental and matcha tea experience plans.

What should I be careful of on the day of the festival?

Plan in advance

On that day, Asakusa Station on all lines will be extremely crowded! The queue will likely start from the platform at the moment you get off the train, so it can take more than 15 minutes just to get up to the ground😣
Instead of Asakusa Station, we recommend getting off one station before it😣
It's also a good idea to check the location of the toilets in advance🙆

Securing a place for yourself in advance on roads or in parks are prohibited.

According to the official website of the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, saving places for yourself or someone else is prohibited. Marking places with duct tape or chalk is also prohibited.

The sweltering heat continues this year, but maybe you might be able to forget about it, when colorful fireworks light up a sky.
We hope you will create some wonderful memories for yourself at the Sumida River Fireworks Festival!
